BMW R1200 GS Recall 17V481: Rear reflectors may be blocked by luggage cases, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 17V481, reported July 28, 2017, 47,775 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

On certain BMW motorcycles equipped with optional aluminum luggage cases, the rear reflex reflectors can be partially blocked from view. The aluminum case mounts on some models can also partially block the reflectors. The vehicles therefore do not meet federal safety standard FMVSS 108 for lamps and reflective devices.

If the rear reflectors are obscured, other drivers may have a harder time seeing your motorcycle at night or in low light, which can increase the risk of a crash. The recall covers several BMW F650GS and F800GS models from 2008 through 2018, including 2008-2012 F650GS and 2008-2018 F800GS vehicles, along with other listed models. The recall began October 16, 2017.

BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will install reflectors on the cases or an additional bracket with rear reflex reflectors, free of charge. You can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and check your VIN for open recalls.
