Jayco Travel Trailer JAY Flight SLX Recall 17V440: Overstated cargo capacity label can lead to overloading and crashes

NHTSA campaign 17V440, reported July 13, 2017, 116 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2017 Jay Flight SLX travel trailers with the Rocky Mountain Package have Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) labels that do not account for the weight of the water tank and water. As a result, the listed capacity is overstated by more than the allowed 1% variance, and the trailer does not fully comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110, which covers tire selection and rims.

Because the labeled capacity is too high, the trailer may be loaded beyond what it can safely carry. An overloaded trailer can handle poorly and has a higher risk of a crash.

Jayco has notified owners and will send corrected labels at no charge. To check whether your trailer is affected, contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267 and reference recall number 9901358. You can also check your VIN for open recalls. Until you receive the corrected label, account for the water tank and water weight when loading your trailer.

Problem
Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2017 Jay Flight SLX travel trailers equipped with the Rocky Mountain Package option. The Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) labels on the affected vehicles did not include the weight of the water tank and water when calculating the CCC, therefore, the CCC is overstated beyond the 1% variance allowed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk
Without an accurate CCC, the trailer may be overloaded, affecting the handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Jayco has notified owners and will provide them with corrected labels, free of charge. The recall began on July 20, 2017. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267. Jayco's number for this recall is 9901358.
