BMW R1200 GS Recall 17V438: Front fork tube can separate, risking loss of control

NHTSA campaign 17V438, reported July 10, 2017, 14,626 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

BMW is recalling certain 2014-2017 R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure motorcycles because the front fork tube may separate from the pressed-in seal plug that secures it to the upper triple clamp.

If the fork tube detaches from the sealing plug, handling and stability are affected, which increases the risk of a crash. Riders should be cautious and avoid high-speed or demanding riding until the motorcycle is inspected.

The repair is free at an authorized BMW dealer, where an additional fixed fork tube bush will be added, and a fork that is sufficiently damaged will be replaced with a modified new part. Owners can also contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
