What this recall means for you
Some 2017 Yamaha YZF-R3 motorcycles built for the US market may have a Canadian Motor Vehicle Certification Label instead of the required US label. This means the label does not meet federal certification rules. If the VIN stamped on the frame does not match the VIN printed on the label, owners may not be able to tell whether their motorcycle is covered by an important safety recall.
The risk is that an open safety recall could go unnoticed, leaving a problem on the bike unrepaired. Check your VIN against any open recalls at NHTSA.gov or with a Yamaha dealer, and compare the VIN on your certification label with the one stamped on the frame.
Yamaha will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the Vehicle Certification Label free of charge. The recall began July 21, 2017. You can contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926, referencing Yamaha recall number 990115.
