Ford Escape Recall 17V398: Driver's knee airbag may not inflate in a crash

NHTSA campaign 17V398, reported June 26, 2017, 3 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2016 Escape vehicles were built with driver's knee airbag modules that lack the gas-generating material needed to inflate the bag. In a crash, the knee airbag may not deploy as designed, and the vehicle does not meet federal occupant crash protection requirements.

If the driver's knee airbag fails to inflate in a crash, the driver faces a higher risk of injury. Owners should not assume the airbag will protect them in an accident involving this defect.

Ford will notify affected owners, and authorized dealers will replace the driver's knee airbag free of charge. Owners can call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (Ford recall number 17C11) and should check their VIN for open recalls.
