Volkswagen Jetta Recall 17V352: VIN Mismatch on Body and Windshield Plate

NHTSA campaign 17V352, reported May 31, 2017, 2 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some vehicles have a Vehicle Identification Number stamped on the body that does not match the VIN plate near the windshield. Because the two numbers disagree, the vehicle does not meet federal certification requirements for vehicle identification. The notice identifies this as a compliance problem rather than a direct crash or fire hazard.

The mismatch can cause problems with registration, title transfers, insurance, and inspections, since records are tied to the VIN. The remedy is free: Volkswagen has notified owners and replaces the affected vehicles at no charge. Owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 06A8.

To check whether your vehicle is affected, compare the VIN on the body with the plate near the windshield, and check your VIN for open recalls at your authorized Volkswagen dealer or through NHTSA's recall lookup.
