Jeep Compass Recall 17V301: Left Axle Can Detach, Causing Loss of Drive and Rollaway

NHTSA campaign 17V301, reported May 9, 2017, 4,705 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The left front halfshaft may not be fully seated in the transmission. Over time it can disengage from the transmission or break, causing a loss of drive. If the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, it may also roll even when the shifter is in Park.

Either condition raises the risk of a crash. A sudden loss of power can leave you unable to keep control of the vehicle, and a rolling vehicle can strike people or property.

The repair is free. Dealers will inspect the left front halfshaft for proper engagement and replace any that are not properly seated in the transmission. Owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall T26), and you can check your VIN for open recalls on the NHTSA website.
