GEM E2 Recall 17V279: Front Wheels May Detach From Low-Speed EVs

NHTSA campaign 17V279, reported April 26, 2017, 1,254 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2016-2017 GEM electric vehicles with steel wheels may have front wheel lug nuts that loosen over time. If the lug nuts loosen, a front wheel can detach from the vehicle.

A wheel separating from the vehicle can increase the risk of a crash. If you own an affected GEM E2, E4, E6, or ELXD, stop driving it if you notice a loose wheel, vibration, or unusual noise from the front, and contact GEM before driving it further.

GEM will notify owners. Dealers will replace the lug nuts and inspect the wheels at no cost to you. You can contact the GEM Consumer Service Department at 1-855-743-3436, and you can check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
