- Problem
- Forest River Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Cherokee recreational trailers. The Federal Placards on these vehicles incorrectly state a Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of 3,970 lbs., when the actual capacity is 3,500 lbs. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is also incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
- Risk
- The incorrect information may result in a user unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of the crash.
- Remedy
- Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Federal Placard with corrected one, free of charge. The recall began on May 31, 2017. Owners may contact Forest River at 1-260-593-4001 extension 17119. Forest River's number for this recall is 17-04042017-0367.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
Certain recreational trailers from model years 2007 through 2011 have a Federal Certification Placard that lists an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (3,970 lbs.) and an incorrect Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The actual axle capacity is 3,500 lbs., so the placard overstates what the trailer can safely carry. These trailers do not meet the labeling requirements of 49 CFR Part 567.
Because the placard shows a higher load limit than the trailer can handle, an owner could unknowingly overload the trailer, which increases the risk of a crash.
The repair is free. Forest River will notify owners, and an authorized dealer will replace the Federal Placard with a corrected one. You can contact Forest River at 1-260-593-4001, extension 17119, using recall number 17-04042017-0367. Check your vehicle identification number for any open recalls.
