Subaru Impreza Recall 17V026: Passenger airbag inflator may rupture and spray metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 17V026, reported January 11, 2017, 69,529 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger-side front airbag inflator in certain Subaru vehicles may rupture during a crash that requires the front airbags to deploy. The inflator's propellant can degrade over time after long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, which can cause the housing to fail.

If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments could strike vehicle occupants and cause serious injury or death. This recall covers vehicles originally sold or ever registered in a specified list of states, including Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Subaru will notify owners, and an authorized dealer will replace the passenger front airbag inflator free of charge. You can contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783, and you should check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
