These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
- Risk
- An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy
- Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator or air bag module, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed March 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What this recall means for you
The front passenger air bag inflator in these BMW X5 and X6 vehicles can rupture if the air bag deploys in a crash. Long-term exposure to high humidity and temperature changes degrades the propellant inside the inflator, which can cause it to break apart and send metal fragments toward the occupants.
A rupture can cause serious injury or death to the people in the front passenger seat. BMW advises owners not to drive their vehicles until the repair is completed.
The remedy is free. BMW will notify owners, and an authorized BMW dealer will replace the front passenger air bag inflator or air bag module at no cost. Owners who received an interim letter from March 2017 should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information. A second notice will be sent when remedy parts are available. You can also check your VIN for open recalls on the NHTSA website.
