Subaru Impreza Recall 17V016: Passenger airbag inflator may rupture in a crash

NHTSA campaign 17V016, reported January 10, 2017, 62,764 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger-side frontal airbag inflator in certain Subaru Baja, Impreza, and Tribeca vehicles, and a Saab 9-2X, may rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. Long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes can degrade the propellant inside the inflator, and this can cause it to break apart.

If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments can strike the occupants and cause serious injury or death. Owners of affected vehicles should contact an authorized dealer to have the passenger front airbag inflator replaced. The repair is free of charge. You can check whether your vehicle has open recalls by entering your VIN on the NHTSA recall lookup site, and Subaru owners can call Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 (Saab owners: 1-800-955-9007).
