- Problem
- HME, Inc. (HME) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Type-6 Wildland trucks manufactured January 2, 2015, to December 1, 2016. The Certification label on the affected vehicles may incorrectly list the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) as 15,876 kilograms instead of the correct GVWR of 8,845 kg. (The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 19,500 lbs is listed correctly on the label.) As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
- Risk
- If there is an incorrect weight rating on the label, the operator may overload the vehicle, possibly resulting in a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- HME will mail a corrected certification label to owners free of charge. The recall began on February 6, 2017. Owners may contact HME customer service at 1-616-534-1463.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
The certification label on these trucks may list the gross vehicle weight rating as 15,876 kilograms instead of the correct 8,845 kilograms. The 19,500 lb rating shown on the label is correct, but the incorrect metric figure means the label does not meet federal certification requirements.
Because of the error, an operator could load the vehicle beyond its true capacity. An overloaded vehicle may lose control and the risk of a crash increases.
Owners can contact HME customer service at 1-616-534-1463 to receive a corrected certification label by mail at no charge. Also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for any open recalls.
