Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Recall 16V867: Liftgate Can Drop Suddenly Due to Corroded Support

NHTSA campaign 16V867, reported December 2, 2016, 50,228 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The liftgate support outer tube may have inadequate anti-corrosion protection, so salt and water can cause it to rust. Once corroded, the tube can lose the gas that helps hold up the liftgate, causing it to fall suddenly.

A liftgate that drops without warning can strike people or cargo, increasing the risk of injury. Owners of affected vehicles should take this seriously, especially if they regularly load or unload through the rear hatch.

The lift gate supports will be replaced free of charge by an authorized Mitsubishi dealer. Owners can contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820, and you can check your VIN for open recalls.
