Forest River Cedar Creek Recall 16V762: Trailer axles may be overloaded, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 16V762, reported October 20, 2016, 8 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2017 Cedar Creek trailers built between September 8 and September 19, 2016, were fitted with axles labeled as 7,000-pound capacity. In fact, those axles are rated and designed for only 6,000 pounds. An owner could unknowingly load the trailer beyond the axle's real limit without realizing it.

An overloaded axle can lead to loss of control and longer stopping distances, which increases the risk of a crash. Because the problem is a mislabeled capacity, the trailer may look and drive normally until the limit is exceeded.

The repair is free. Dealers will replace the axles that carry the incorrect 7,000-pound rating. All affected units are being repaired before sale, so owners of these trailers will not receive a notification letter. If you have questions, contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-593-4000, extension 20209, and check your VIN for any open recalls.

The repair is normally free at an authorized dealer.
