Volvo VHD Recall 16V735: Steering Joints May Corrode and Fail, Risking Loss of Steering

NHTSA campaign 16V735, reported October 13, 2016, 4,177 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Volvo VHD trucks have front suspension ball joint seals that may be compromised, allowing water and other contaminants to enter the lower and upper ball joints of the front control arms and drag links. Once inside, the contamination can cause corrosion, accelerated wear, and eventually failure of the ball joint.

If a ball joint fails, the driver could lose complete steering control, which significantly increases the risk of a crash. Drivers of affected trucks should treat this as a serious safety issue.

Volvo will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the drag links free of charge. Owners can contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586 and reference recall number RVXX1606. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for any open recalls.
