Hyundai Genesis Coupe Recall 16V722: Passenger Airbag May Deploy Incorrectly in a Crash

NHTSA campaign 16V722, reported October 7, 2016, 84,500 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The electrical connector for the front passenger seat occupancy sensor (Occupant Classification System) can come loose when the seat is moved. If the connector is disconnected, the sensor cannot correctly tell whether the seat is occupied by an adult or a child, and the passenger airbag may deploy only its first stage, or deploy in a way that does not match the crash or the occupant. This increases the risk of injury to the front seat passenger.

The repair is free. Hyundai will notify owners, and authorized dealers will secure the connector so it cannot disconnect. Parts are not yet available for this repair, so Hyundai will send a second letter when they are. You can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall number 151.

Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls on the NHTSA website or with your Hyundai dealer. If your vehicle is listed, contact an authorized dealer to schedule the free inspection and repair when the parts become available.

Problem
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.
Risk
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.
Remedy
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge. Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 151.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
