Subaru Outback Recall 16V716: Knee airbag bracket may detach, reducing driver crash protection

NHTSA campaign 16V716, reported October 6, 2016, 54 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain vehicles built in late September 2016 may have a knee guard bracket that is not properly attached to the steering beam. If the knee guard is not secure and the driver is not wearing a seatbelt, the knee guard may not properly restrain the driver's lower body in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy is free. Authorized dealers will inspect the knee guard welding on the steering beam and replace the beam if needed. Subaru will notify owners directly, but you can also contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 (recall number WTL-72). Check your VIN for open recalls to see whether your vehicle is affected.
