- If the driver is unaware that the service brakes have low air pressure, the brakes may apply automatically, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- MCI will notify owners, and dealers will correct the programming of the multiplexing system, free of charge. The recall began on October 18, 2016. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947. MCI's number for this recall is SB 439.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
On certain 2017 J4500 motorcoaches built between March 14, 2016 and August 23, 2016, a programming error in the multiplexing system can prevent any visual or audible warning when the primary service brake air reservoir has low pressure. The vehicle also does not meet federal air brake safety requirements.
If the driver does not know the service brakes are low on air, the brakes may apply automatically, which increases the risk of a crash.
Owners will be notified by Motor Coach Industries, and authorized dealers will correct the multiplexing system programming at no cost. For questions, contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947 (recall SB 439), and check your vehicle identification number for any open recalls.
