Smeal Aerial Recall 16V663: Touchscreen Can Switch Accessories On or Off Unexpectedly

NHTSA campaign 16V663, reported September 14, 2016, 6 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2015-2016 Smeal Aerial fire apparatus vehicles are equipped with Class 1 Ultraview touchscreens made by Hale Products. These touchscreens may experience false switch activations, meaning a switch can be triggered without the operator's knowledge. When this happens, accessories such as emergency beacons or automatic snow chains can turn on or off unintentionally, which affects vehicle performance.

The unintended change in accessory status can increase the risk of a crash. Owners should be aware of this risk and take the recall seriously.

Smeal will notify owners, and authorized dealers will reprogram the touchscreen software free of charge. The recall began October 18, 2016. Owners can contact Smeal customer service at 1-877-415-8628, selecting option 1 for Smeal and then option 4 for Direct Customer Service, and should check their vehicle identification number for open recalls.
