Yamaha YZF-R3 Recall 16V459: Engine May Seize From Oil Pump Gear Failure, Risking Sudden Lockup

NHTSA campaign 16V459, reported June 23, 2016, 11,280 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

An oil pump problem can cause the oil pressure to be improperly regulated. Over time, the oil pump drive gear may fail, cutting off the engine's oil supply and causing the engine to seize.

If the engine seizes, the rear wheel may lock up suddenly, which increases the risk of a crash. Affected owners should stop riding the motorcycle if they notice warning signs and contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Yamaha will replace the oil pump free of charge at an authorized dealer. Owners can contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926 and reference recall number 990105. You can also check your VIN for open recalls.
