PJ Trailers T1 Recall 16V433: Trailer Tongue Can Crack and Separate From Trailer

NHTSA campaign 16V433, reported June 14, 2016, 36 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

A notch cut into the steel tongue of certain single axle tilt trailers made between March 31 and November 17, 2015 may have been too deep. This can weaken the tongue so it cracks and the trailer separates from the tow vehicle.

If the trailer separates, it is no longer connected to the tow vehicle, which increases the risk of a crash. Owners should contact PJ Trailers customer service at 1-866-752-8781 to arrange the free reinforcement kit, which the company has already provided to owners to have installed at no cost. You can also check your VIN for open recalls.

Problem
PJ Trailers is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 T1 single axle tilt trailers manufactured March 31, 2015, to November 17, 2015. During production, these trailers had a notch cut into steel tongue that may have been too deep and thus compromised the strength of the tongue, causing it to crack and separate from the trailer.
Risk

Remedy
PJ Trailers has notified owners, and provided each owner with a reinforcement kit to have installed, free of charge. The recall began in November 2015. Owners may contact PJ Trailers customer service at 1-866-752-8781.
