Sterling Bullet 5500 Recall 16V418: Passenger Airbag Inflator May Rupture, Spraying Metal Fragments

NHTSA campaign 16V418, reported June 9, 2016, 2,601 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2008-2009 Sterling Bullet 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks built between October 15, 2007, and November 10, 2008, have passenger-side frontal airbag inflators that may rupture. The inflator propellant can degrade over time after long-term exposure to humidity, high heat, and repeated temperature changes, which can cause the inflator to break apart.

If an inflator ruptures, metal fragments can strike occupants and may cause serious injury or death. Owners should check whether their vehicle is included in this recall and avoid delaying the repair.

The replacement of the passenger frontal airbag inflator is free of charge at an authorized dealer. Owners can contact Sterling customer service at 1-800-547-0712, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
