West-Mark Sugar Tank Recall 16V399: Brake drag can cause wheel-end fires on trailers

NHTSA campaign 16V399, reported June 2, 2016, 7 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain trailers built between October 2014 and June 2015 may have an air brake actuator with a diaphragm that is not properly seated in the brake chamber. This can cause the brakes to drag, meaning they do not fully release and stay partially applied while the trailer is moving.

Brake drag can generate excessive heat at the wheel end, which may result in a wheel-end fire. Owners should take this recall seriously and stop the trailer in a safe place if they notice signs of brake drag, such as unusual heat or smell from a wheel, or reduced towing performance.

The repair is free. Dealers will replace the affected Haldex Life Seal Type 30/30 long stroke actuators with Haldex Gold Seal Type 30/30 long stroke actuators. Contact West-Mark customer service at 1-800-692-5844, or Haldex at 1-800-752-2501 or [email protected]. You can also check your trailer's VIN for open recalls.
