Ameritrans 285 Recall 16V328: Incorrect weight label may hide overloading and crash risk

NHTSA campaign 16V328, reported May 19, 2016, 225 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2012-2016 Ameritrans 285 shuttle buses, built on Ford E-450 chassis and manufactured from August 1, 2012, through May 13, 2016, have certification labels that may list an inaccurate gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Because the label may understate how much the bus can safely carry, the vehicle could be loaded beyond its limit without the driver realizing it. The vehicles also do not meet the federal certification requirements in 49 CFR Part 567.

If the GVWR is unknowingly exceeded, vehicle handling may be adversely affected, which increases the risk of a crash.

Ameritrans will notify owners. Authorized dealers will remove and/or reposition bus seats as necessary and install a corrected label, free of charge. Owners can contact Ameritrans customer service at 1-574-262-8935, and you can check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
