BMW X5 Recall 16V311: Front driveshaft joint can fail, causing loss of traction

NHTSA campaign 16V311, reported May 17, 2016, 21,493 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The front driveshaft universal joint on these vehicles may not seal out water and debris. Over time, contamination can damage the joint and cause it to fail. If that happens, the front wheels will no longer be driven, which affects traction, and continued driving with a broken joint may damage other components. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash.

BMW will notify affected owners, and authorized dealers will replace the front driveshaft at no cost to you. The recall began on July 8, 2016. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls, and if you have questions, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
