Kia Optima Recall 16V231: Driver airbag may not fully deploy in a crash

NHTSA campaign 16V231, reported April 21, 2016, 17 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2016 Kia Optima vehicles built between November 10, 2015 and February 12, 2016 may have a driver's frontal airbag that is missing a chemical enhancer needed for its second-stage deployment. Without that second stage, the airbag may not inflate fully in a crash.

If the second stage does not deploy, the risk of injury or death in a crash increases. Owners should take this recall seriously and have their vehicle checked promptly.

Kia will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the driver's frontal airbag module free of charge. You can contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (Kia recall number SC131), and you can check your VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is affected.
