Cruiser RV Stryker TOY Recall 16V196: Trailer Safety Chains May Break, Allowing Trailer Separation

NHTSA campaign 16V196, reported April 7, 2016, 48 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain travel trailers built between December 2015 and March 2016 have safety chains on the A-frame rated at 11,700 pounds, which is lower than the trailer's gross vehicle weight rating. If the main trailer connection fails, the trailer's weight can break these chains, allowing the trailer to separate from the towing vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy is free. Authorized dealers will replace the existing safety chains with chains rated at 16,200 pounds. Owners will be notified by the manufacturer, but you can also contact Cruiser customer service at 1-260-562-3500 to confirm whether your trailer is affected. Check your VIN for open recalls as well.

Problem
Cruiser RV (Cruiser) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Stryker travel trailers, models ST3316, STG3112 and STG3212, manufactured December 11, 2015, to March 10, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with safety chains on the A-frame that are rated for 11,700 lbs instead of being rated equal to, or greater than, the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the travel trailer.

In the event the main trailer connection fails, the weight of the trailer can break the safety chains if the chains are not strong enough, allowing the trailer to separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Cruiser will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing safety chains with chains that have a 16,200lb rating, free of charge. The recall began on April 21, 2016. Owners may contact Cruiser customer service at 1-260-562-3500.
