Blue Bird ALL American Recall 16V172: School Bus Seats May Detach in a Crash, Raising Injury Risk

NHTSA campaign 16V172, reported March 25, 2016, 67 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Blue Bird All American school buses from 2011 to 2017 model years, built between August 20, 2010 and December 16, 2015, have a problem with seats over the wheelhouse area on buses equipped with rear side emergency doors. The rear legs of these seats may detach from the floor in a crash. This means a seated, belted occupant could travel forward, so the vehicle does not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 210 for seat belt anchorages.

If a seat cannot hold an occupant in place, the belt may not restrain them properly during a crash, which increases the risk of injury.

Owners will be notified by Blue Bird. Authorized dealers will replace the rear leg assembly at no cost. For questions, contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242. Owners can also check their vehicle identification number for any open recalls.

Problem
Blue Bird Body Company (Blue Bird) is recalling certain model year 2011-2017 All American school buses manufactured from August 20, 2010, through December 16, 2015. Buses with rear side emergency doors have seats over the wheelhouse area whose rear legs may detach from the floor in a crash, resulting in belted occupants traveling forward. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."
Risk
If the seat does not allow the occupant to be properly restrained in the event of a crash, they would be at an increased risk of injury.
