Fccc XC-P Recall 16V121: Power Steering Hose May Fail, Causing Loss of Steering Assist

NHTSA campaign 16V121, reported March 1, 2016, 128 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2014-2016 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCP vehicles, built between April 26, 2013, and January 15, 2015, may have power steering fluid that runs hotter than the power steering hose is rated for. Over time, the hose can fail, causing a sudden loss of power steering fluid and power assist.

Without power assist, the vehicle becomes noticeably harder to steer in either direction at low speeds, which increases the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the power steering hose with one that has a higher temperature rating, free of charge. The recall began July 22, 2016. Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 (recall number FL-702) and should check their VIN for open recalls.

Problem
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCP chassis manufactured from April 26, 2013, through January 15, 2015. The power steering fluid temperature may exceed the power steering hose material ratings on some rear engine chassis built with certain 18,000lb and 20,000lb-load capacity front axles used in motor home applications. This can cause the hose to fail, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering fluid and power assist.
Risk
Loss of power steering assist would result in increased difficulty to steer the vehicle in either direction at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering hose with a hose that has a higher temperature rating, free of charge. The recall began on July 22, 2016. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's recall number for this campaign is FL-702.
