Honda Civic Recall 16V074: Engine may seize from a missing or misinstalled piston pin clip

NHTSA campaign 16V074, reported February 9, 2016, 42,129 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2016 Civics built between September 2015 and February 2016 with 2.0-liter engines may have piston assemblies made without a wrist pin circlip, or with one installed incorrectly. Without a properly secured clip, the piston wrist pin can drift and damage the cylinder, which can cause the engine to seize and raises the risk of a crash or fire.

Honda will repair affected vehicles free of charge. Dealers will inspect and replace the piston assemblies and any damaged engine parts as needed. Parts are expected in summer 2016, and owners were first sent an interim notice starting March 31, 2016, with a second notice to follow once parts are available. You can reach Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 and check your VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is included.
