GEM E4 Recall 15V820: Seat belts may get stuck and fail to restrain riders in a crash

NHTSA campaign 15V820, reported December 7, 2015, 1,364 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2015 GEM low-speed vehicles built between December 15, 2014 and August 25, 2015 may have seat belts whose retractor mechanisms can fail. When this happens, the belt can stay stuck in one position, so it may not retract or extend properly. The vehicles then fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 209 for seat belt assemblies.

If a seat belt does not retract or extend, the occupant may not be properly secured during a crash, which raises the risk of injury. Check whether your vehicle is included, and test your belt by pulling it out and letting it retract fully. If it sticks or does not move freely, stop driving the vehicle until it is repaired.

The seat belt assemblies will be replaced free of charge at an authorized GEM dealer. GEM will notify owners directly, but you can also call the GEM Consumer Service Department at 1-855-743-3436 (Polaris recall number L-15-02) and check your VIN for open recalls.
