Mercedes-Benz S550E Recall 15V796: Vehicle may unexpectedly shift into park, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 15V796, reported November 24, 2015, 52 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2015 S550 Hybrid vehicles built between April 24 and June 12, 2015, may have an onboard charger that was not built to specification. The charger can fail to work with an external charging cable and may incorrectly detect a charging cable even while the vehicle is being driven.

If the charger wrongly detects a cable while the vehicle is stopped or moving at a very slow speed, the transmission may unexpectedly shift into park. An unexpected shift to park increases the risk of a crash.

The repair is free. Authorized dealers will replace the onboard charger at no cost, and owners will be notified by Mercedes-Benz USA. You can contact Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6372, and you should check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
