Strick DRY Freight Van Trailer Recall 15V781: Trailer rear guard may fail in crash, risking car underride

NHTSA campaign 15V781, reported November 23, 2015, 2,179 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain dry freight van trailers built between April 1998 and January 2005 have rear impact guards that use gussets 46829 and 46830. These guards may not be strong enough to stop a passenger vehicle from sliding under the trailer if it rear-ends it. The guards therefore do not meet federal rear impact guard safety requirements.

If a car strikes the rear of the trailer, the guard may fail to keep the car from traveling underneath. This raises the risk of serious injury to the car's driver, since the vehicle's front-end protection and airbags may not work as designed in an underride crash.

The repair is free. Strick will notify owners and authorized service centers will install reinforcements to the rear impact guards at no cost. The recall began January 13, 2016; owners can contact Strick customer service at 1-704-436-2590 and should check their trailer's VIN for open recalls.
