Hyundai Sonata Recall 15V629: Corroded Front Springs Can Fracture and Puncture Tires

NHTSA campaign 15V629, reported October 7, 2015, 28,157 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Road salt can corrode the front coil springs on certain 2011 Hyundai Elantra and Sonata vehicles. If a spring fractures, it may contact the tire and possibly puncture it, which increases the risk of a crash.

This recall covers 2011 Elantra vehicles built from November 12, 2010 to March 31, 2011, and Sonata vehicles built from December 11, 2009 to February 28, 2010, that were sold in or are currently registered in 21 states and the District of Columbia, mostly in the Northeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Vehicles previously registered in those salt-belt states but now registered elsewhere are also eligible for inspection and repair.

Hyundai will replace the front coil springs at no cost at an authorized dealer. Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059 (Hyundai recall number 133), and should check their VIN for open recalls.
