Strick Van Trailer Recall 15V543: Rear guard may fail in crash, letting cars slide under trailer

NHTSA campaign 15V543, reported August 27, 2015, 33 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain van trailers may have rear impact guards that are not strong enough to stop a vehicle from traveling under the trailer if it is rear-ended. The guards do not meet the federal rear impact guard standard (FMVSS No. 223).

If the trailer is struck from behind by a car, the guard may fail to keep the car from sliding underneath. This raises the risk of serious injury to the driver of the car. Owners should not wait on this issue.

The repair is free: the manufacturer will add reinforcements to the gussets, and fleet owners will be notified. Replacement parts are not yet available. Owners should expect an interim notice starting in late October 2015 and a second notice when parts are ready, currently expected before the end of 2015. To check whether your trailer is affected, contact Strick customer service at 1-260-692-1300, and check your VIN for open recalls.
