RAM 1500 Recall 15V534: Side curtain airbags may not protect rear passengers in a crash

What this recall means for you

Certain 2014-2015 Ram 1500 Quad Cab trucks, built between August 26, 2013 and August 8, 2015, have side air bag inflatable curtains that may not fully cover the C-pillars in a crash. This means the curtains may not fully protect rear seat passengers and can fail to meet federal ejection mitigation safety requirements.

If a crash occurs and a side curtain airbag does not inflate as intended, rear seat occupants face an increased risk of injury.

The remedy is free. Dealers will inspect both side curtain airbags for proper orientation, install a foil patch on both sides of the headliner, and replace one or both curtain airbags if needed. Chrysler will notify owners, and you can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall number R47). You can also check your VIN for open recalls.

Problem
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Ram 1500 Quad Cab trucks manufactured August 26, 2013, to August 8, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with side air bag inflatable curtains (SABIC) that may not fully overlap the C-pillars in the event of a vehicle crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."
Risk
In the event of a vehicle crash, if a SABIC does not inflate as intended, there is an increased risk of injury to the rear seat occupant.
Remedy
Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will inspect the right and left side air bag inflatable curtains (SABIC) for proper orientation and a foil patch will be installed on both sides of the headliner. One or both of the air bag inflatable curtains (SABIC) will be replaced if necessary. The recall began on October 7, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R47.
