International Transtar Recall 15V438: Oil Leak Near Hot Engine Parts Can Cause Fire

NHTSA campaign 15V438, reported July 8, 2015, 63 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

A vent tube elbow on the engine's crankcase ventilation breather can detach because of excessive crankcase pressure. When that happens, engine oil can spray onto hot surfaces, which raises the risk of a fire.

Dealers will secure the ends of the 90-degree elbow, and the engine's electronic control module will be reprogrammed with software that adjusts engine output during misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressure. Cummins is notifying owners on behalf of Navistar. The repairs are free. Owners can also call Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or Cummins customer service at 1-800-343-7357, and should check their VIN for open recalls.

Problem
Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 International TranStar vehicles manufactured April 10, 2012, to December 12, 2014. Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.
Risk
If engine oil comes into contact with a hot surface, there is an increased risk of a fire.
Remedy
Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Navistar, and dealers will secure the ends of the 90-degree elbow. In addition, the electronic control module (ECM) will be reprogrammed with software that can adjust the engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressures. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2015. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825, or Cummins customer service at 1-800-343-7357.
