Kidron Refrigerated Trailer Recall 15V437: Trailer Brakes May Stop Less Effectively in Emergency

NHTSA campaign 15V437, reported July 8, 2015, 49 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain refrigerated trailers may have a wiring harness that does not supply enough power to the rear connector used when a second trailer is attached for doubles operation. As a result, the anti-lock brake system on the second trailer may not work properly.

If the second trailer's anti-lock brake module does not function correctly, braking distance can increase in an emergency stop, which raises the risk of a crash.

The repair is free. Dealers will install an additional power cable at no charge. Owners can contact VT Hackney customer service at 1-800-763-0700 for more information, and you can check your vehicle identification number for any open recalls.

Problem
VT Hackney, Inc. (VT Hackney) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Kidron Refrigerated Trailers manufactured August 9, 2013, to June 15, 2015. The affected trailers have a main wiring harness that may not supply adequate power to the connector at the rear of the trailer. This rear connector is used when a second trailer is attached for doubles operation. As a result of the insufficient power, second trailer's anti-lock brake system (ABS) may not function properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the Requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Risk
If the ABS module on the second trailer does not function properly, the trailer may have an increased braking distance in an emergency braking situation, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
VT Hackney will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional power cable, free of charge. The recall began on August 20, 2015. Owners may contact VT Hackney customer service at 1-800-763-0700.
