Yamaha WR250R Recall 15V410: Stator coil may short out, stalling engine and raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 15V410, reported June 29, 2015, 12,721 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Yamaha WR250R and WR250X motorcycles may have stator coil insulation, part of the alternator, that can become damaged and short circuit because it does not withstand heat well. When this happens, the motorcycle stops charging and the battery can go dead.

If the battery dies, the engine can stall while you are riding, which increases the risk of a crash. Owners should be aware of this risk and watch for signs of charging trouble.

Yamaha will notify affected owners, and authorized dealers will replace the stator coil with one that has sufficient heat resistance. The repair is free of charge. You can also check your VIN for open recalls and contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926.
