Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX Recall 15V344: Engine oil leak can cause fire in school buses

NHTSA campaign 15V344, reported June 3, 2015, 746 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Saf-T-Liner HDX school buses built from May 2008 to December 2014 with Cummins Westport ISL G engines may have a problem with the engine's crankcase vent tube. Excessive crankcase pressure can cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, which may allow engine oil to contact hot surfaces.

If engine oil touches a hot surface, the risk of a fire increases. Owners should take this recall seriously, especially for buses that carry children.

The repair is free at an authorized dealer. Dealers will secure the ends of the 90-degree elbow and reprogram the engine control module with software that adjusts engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressure. Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Daimler Trucks North America (recall number FL-681). You can also call DTNA customer service at 1-800-745-8000 or Cummins at 1-800-343-7357, and check your VIN for open recalls.
