Ford Fusion Recall 15V340: Power Steering May Cut Out, Making Steering Harder at Low Speed

NHTSA campaign 15V340, reported June 2, 2015, 393,623 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The electric power steering assist system in certain vehicles may shut down because of a fault in the steering motor sensor. When this happens, the steering assist is lost and the driver must apply extra effort to steer, especially at lower speeds.

Losing steering assist raises the risk of a crash, since steering becomes noticeably harder to control. Owners should be aware of this risk and have their vehicle checked.

Authorized Ford dealers will inspect the Power Steering Control Module for diagnostic trouble codes. If a loss-of-steering-assist code is found, the steering gear will be replaced at no cost. If no codes are found, the control module software will be updated at no cost. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (Ford recall 15S18), and should check their VIN for open recalls.
