Mitsubishi Eclipse Recall 15V337: Brakes May Lose Power in Emergency Stops

NHTSA campaign 15V337, reported June 2, 2015, 74,836 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Corrosion inside the anti-lock brake system (ABS) unit can cause one or more of its internal valves to seize. When the ABS is engaged during a braking event, a seized valve increases brake pedal travel and reduces braking ability.

A sudden loss of braking performance raises the risk of a crash. Drivers may find the pedal feels softer or travels farther than usual before the car slows, which is most dangerous in an emergency stop.

The repair is free at an authorized Mitsubishi dealer. The dealer will inspect, flush and clean the ABS hydraulic unit with high-grade brake fluid, and replace the ABS unit if the inspection shows the valves may seize. Owners can also contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820 (recall SR-15-004), and should check their VIN for open recalls.
