Blue Bird ALL American Recall 15V293: Oil Leak Can Cause Engine Fire in Rear-Engine School Buses

NHTSA campaign 15V293, reported May 19, 2015, 840 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

This recall covers certain 2009-2016 Blue Bird All American rear-engine school buses built between December 2008 and May 2015 that have Cummins Westport ISL G engines. Under excessive crankcase pressure, the 90-degree elbow of the engine's vent tube assembly can detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, allowing engine oil to escape.

If that oil contacts a hot surface, it can ignite, creating an increased risk of an engine fire. Owners should take this recall seriously, especially given that these buses carry students.

The repair is free at Cummins service centers. It involves securing the ends of the 90-degree elbow and reprogramming the engine control module with software that adjusts engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressure. Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Blue Bird. You can also contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 or Cummins at 1-800-343-7357, citing recall number R15YE-SB, and check your vehicle's VIN for any open recalls.
