Mack LEU Recall 15V275: Oil leak near hot engine parts can cause fire

NHTSA campaign 15V275, reported May 11, 2015, 2,124 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

A vent tube elbow on the engine's crankcase ventilation breather can detach when crankcase pressure runs too high. When that happens, engine oil can reach hot surfaces, which raises the risk of a fire.

The repair is free. Cummins service centers will secure the ends of the 90-degree elbow and reprogram the engine's electronic control module with software that limits crankcase pressure during misfire conditions. Problem
Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 Mack MRU and LEU trucks manufactured June 25, 2010, to April 30, 2015, and 2015-2016 LR6 trucks manufactured from December 18, 2014 through March 6, 2015. Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.
Risk
If engine oil comes into contact with a hot surface, there could be an increased risk of a fire.
Remedy
Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Mack, and Cummins service centers will administer the repairs which include securing the ends of the 90-degree elbow and reprogramming the electronic control module (ECM) with software that can adjust the engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressures. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on June 12, 2015. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-528-6586 or Cummins Inc. at 1-800-343-7357.
