- Component
- AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Problem
- Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2015 Accent vehicles manufactured September 15, 2014, to February 10, 2015. In very cold temperatures, the occupant detection system (ODS) may not be able to determine if a child restraint seat is in the front passenger seat.
- Risk
- If the ODS fails to detect that the seat is occupied by a child restraint seat, the front air bag will not be deactivated and, in the event of a crash necessitating front air bag deployment, the air bag deployment could cause increased risk of injury to the occupant in the child restraint seat.
- Remedy
- Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will correct ODS software, free of charge. The recall began on June 4, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 129.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
In very cold temperatures, the occupant detection system in certain 2015 Accent vehicles built between September 15, 2014 and February 10, 2015 may fail to recognize that a child restraint seat is in the front passenger seat. When this happens, the front passenger airbag is not turned off as it should be.
If a crash occurs that requires the front airbag to deploy, the airbag can increase the risk of injury to a child sitting in a child seat in the front passenger position. Owners should keep children in the back seat whenever possible.
Hyundai will notify owners by mail, and authorized dealers will update the occupant detection system software at no cost. You can call Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059 (recall number 129) for more information, and check your vehicle's VIN for any open recalls.
