International 4800 Recall 15V169: Front driveshaft joint may seize, risking separation and crash

NHTSA campaign 15V169, reported March 24, 2015, 500 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 1999-2002 International 4800 4x4 trucks with Fabco TC-200 transfer cases have a front driveshaft fitted under an earlier recall. The double Cardan joint in that driveshaft may seize under certain conditions. If it does, the front driveshaft may separate and, in some situations, cause a front axle lockup.

A driveshaft separation or axle lockup can cause a loss of vehicle control and increases the risk of a crash. Navistar will notify owners of this recall, which began on June 16, 2015, and supersedes earlier recall 14V-520, which only called for disconnecting the front driveshaft as an interim measure.

The repair is free. Dealers will install front driveshaft guards at both ends of the shaft and lockout the front wheel hubs. Any driveshaft found with loose or binding double Cardan joints at either end will be replaced at no cost. Contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 (Navistar recall number 15506), and check your vehicle identification number for open recalls.
