Buick Encore Recall 15V146: Steering Assist Can Suddenly Fail, Raising Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 15V146, reported March 13, 2015, 2,295 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2015 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax vehicles built in a narrow range of late 2014 to early 2015 may have a steering column assembly housing that contacts the power steering circuit board. Over time, this contact can wear the board down.

If the circuit board wears, the electric power steering assist can suddenly stop working. Losing steering assist makes the vehicle harder to control, which increases the risk of a crash.

The repair is free. Owners will be notified by General Motors, and authorized dealers will inspect and replace the steering column assembly as necessary at no cost. You can contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, referencing GM recall 15168. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
