Chevrolet Volt Recall 15V145: Volt May Start Engine and Build Up Carbon Monoxide

NHTSA campaign 15V145, reported March 13, 2015, 50,236 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some Chevrolet Volts from the 2011 to 2013 model years can have a problem when the driver gets out without fully shutting off the electrical system. If the car is left in that state, the battery can drain enough that the gasoline engine starts on its own to recharge it. If that engine runs for a long time inside an enclosed space, such as a garage, carbon monoxide can build up and create a risk of personal injury.

General Motors is recalling affected vehicles, which were built between August 25, 2010 and June 26, 2013. Dealers will update the engine management software to limit how long a stationary vehicle can stay in the ON position. The repair is free of charge.

If you own one of these Volts, check your VIN for open recalls and contact an authorized Chevrolet dealer to schedule the update. For questions, you can call Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and reference GM recall number 14617.
