Toyota RAV4 Recall 15V144: Power steering may fail, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 15V144, reported March 13, 2015, 110,085 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2014-2015 Toyota RAV4 vehicles and 2015 Toyota Camry and Highlander vehicles may have a steering control unit (the electric power steering electronic control unit) that was damaged during manufacturing. Over time, this damage can cause the electric power steering system to fail.

If power steering is lost unexpectedly, steering becomes much harder, which increases the risk of a crash. Keep an eye out for any change in steering feel and be prepared to take your vehicle in promptly if you notice one.

Toyota will notify affected owners. Dealers will check the serial number of the electric power steering control unit or steering column assembly, and if it falls within the affected range, the unit will be replaced free of charge. The recall began May 7, 2015. You can also check your VIN for open recalls and contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
